The Oregon Handball Association was thrilled to continue its partnership with the World Players of Handball in growing and promoting the game of handball in Oregon and the Pacific Northwest, hosting the 2025 Oregon State Singles Championship, sponsored by the WPH at Sunset Athletic Club in Beaverton, Oregon on the second weekend in March.

Men’s Open Singles

Eighteen of the Pacific Northwest’s best players entered the 2025 Oregon State Singles Championships, headlined by two-time defending champion and SR48 pro Kyle English and nine-time Oregon state singles champion Dalton Beall.

Kyle English started his championship defense with two routine victories on his way to the semifinals, defeating Simon Hanover and Jesus Avila, respectively. English’s defense was met by a buzzsaw in the semifinals, as fifth-seeded Boxer Rosales overwhelmed the former football star. “Boxer just destroyed me,” English would later say one week after throwing for nine touchdowns in a flag football league game.

Cody Townsend was seeking his first Oregon state title, while attempting to thwart Dalton Beall’s record-breaking tenth attempt. Townsend was too strong for Beall, thumping his hunting comrade in two games to meet Rosales in the final.

Known for his legendary big ball 3-Wall play, Boxer demonstrated that he is a force indoors as well, stunning Townsend in a first game blowout in the final. Boxer’s unorthodox shot making, incredible power, and dazzling court coverage were on display in game two, closing out Townsend in a much closer game to clinch his first Oregon state title.

“The final was really good,” stated Boxer, famously known for being a man of few words. “I feel like we put on a good show for everyone. I think what helped me (win the game) were my kill shots and endurance to run everything down and keep the rally going.”

“Boxer is so quick, and was able to keep Cody running side to side and off balance while he controlled the front court,” stated WPH pioneer and former PNW star Jeff “The Chief” Kastner watching courtside.

Semifinals

Rosales def English 21-6, 21-12

Townsend def Beall 21-7, 21-9

Final: Rosales def Townsend 21-10, 21-18

JR WPH Clinic and Round Robin Singles at the 2025 OR State Championships

The 2025 Oregon State Championships was proud to host a JR WPH clinic and junior round robin singles on Saturday morning of the event, with JR WPH Coaches Jean Kastner and Che Lowenstein leading the clinic for the nine junior players between the ages of seven to fourteen. Coaches Kastner and Lowenstein discussed and demonstrated basic handball strokes for the mostly first-time players, with the players practicing hitting with both hands and learning the rules following the instruction. The juniors were then grouped by age and played two round robin tournaments with modified rules. “The kids had a great time,” boasted Jeff Kastner.

Thank you to Coaches Kastner and Lowenstein for coaching the clinic. Thank you to the coaches, Nick Flores, and Jeff Kastner for info on the clinic.

“No one promotes handball better than the World Players of Handball, and we were thrilled with the turnout at the 2025 Oregon State Singles Championships,” stated tournament director Nick Flores.

Thank you to the Alten Handball Foundation for generously subsidizing player entries. Thank you to tournament director Nick Flores for his outstanding work promoting and running the outstanding event.
