The Eugene Handball Association was proud to host the Oregon State Doubles Championship sponsored by the Alten Handball Foundation and the World Players of Handball on the third weekend of May at the Downtown Athletic Club in Eugene, Oregon.

More than three dozen handball players gathered at the Downtown Athletic Club in a long-awaited return to the premier athletic facility. “The tournament returned to the Downtown Athletic Club for the first time in more than 15 years” explained tournament director Randy Stender. “The turnout was good, as handball is slowly returning to its pre-Covid days.”

Open Doubles

The Oregon State Doubles Championship attracted the best players Oregon, as former champions Dalton Beall, Cody Townsend, and Matt Steele all sought to dethrone the defending champion, Kyle English, who won the 2024 title with R48 Portland Classic tournament director and WPH Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Conor Casey. Also in the hunt were current 40+ National Three-Wall Singles Champion Tyler Stevens and current Collegiate National Open Doubles Champion Jorge Pimentel.

On the top side of the bracket, Kyle English (Beaverton) and Tyler Stevens (Eugene) punched their ticket to the finals by defeating Michael Stenberg (Hood River) and Stephen Stenberg (Beaverton) in two games. On the bottom side of the bracket, Dalton Beall (Junction City) and Cody Townsend (Junction City) advanced to the finals by beating Matt Steele (Hillsboro) and Josh Bateman (Hillsboro) in two games.

In the final, Team English/Stevens dominated most of the first game before stalling at 20-9. Beall and Townsend began to chip away at the large lead, eventually reaching seventeen. English and Stevens agreed to switch sides and were able to stop the comeback, closing out the first game, 21-17.

Team English/Stevens carried the momentum from the first game win into the second game and coasted to a 21-5 win, securing the 2025 Oregon State Doubles Championship.

“The final was good,” English would later say to the WPH. “Probably the most fun I’ve had in a doubles match cause all four of us never stop moving.”
