The middle of May featured the Southeast Regional Handball Championships in Chattanooga, TN., with current top 10 R48 pro Luis Cordova headlining a strong open field that included former top 12 pro tour veteran Scott Kelley and former junior national handball champion and former New York Mets Triple A flame-throwing reliever Nick Mattioni. Cordova defeated Kelley in two games in the semifinals, while Mattioni also advanced in two games in his semifinal, defeating Sergio Arroyo.
Cordova and the former pro baseball pitcher played even throughout the first game, with the pair exchanging the lead seven times before arriving at an 18-all tie. “Nick hit two straight aces to take the lead scored the final point to win game one,” recounted Cordova after the match. Cordova cruised in game two. “Nick seemed to be saving himself for the tiebreaker in the second game,” stated Cordova. Despite saving himself for the tiebreaker, Mattioni still fell behind 10-3. “We were both playing really hard in the tiebreaker, but I just kept the pressure on by hitting the ball hard,” stated Cordova. Cordova prevailed to win the title in the battle of top Southeast stars, 18-21, 21-4, 11-4.
Cordova teamed with Lance Wachholz to win the doubles, defeating his singles rival Nick Mattioni and partner Mike Kavkewitz 21-2, 18-21, 11-10.

Stop #5 is just days away in Las Vegas, as the WPH is proud to present the Vegas Lte May 21st-22nd at the Stratosphere’s two-court complex in Las Vegas. WPH Outdoor #1 Juan Santos and #2 Timbo Gonzalez will be on hand, as will WR48 cross over star Ciana Ni Churraoin.
