On this WPH Wednesday Workout, we’ll discuss the benefits of walking (not riding in a cart) and golfing.

Looking for a mild but not overly taxing workout? Golfing is the perfect activity, as long as you walk and pull or carry your clubs. You might not reach 180 beats per minute like you would running sprints, or feel the muscle burn of an intense weight-lifting session, but you will get a cardio and strength workout by walking while golfing.

According to GolfSpan HERE, walking while playing golf requires about 3.8 miles of walking. Most golf courses include a number of hills and inclines, adding to the challenge and workout of the walk. GolfSpan states that incorporating swinging and walking during a round of golf equates to light jogging, swimming, or cycling. In addition to the cardio workout that will benefit your heart and lungs, swinging a golf club uses the big muscles of the body, making the combination of swings a full body workout – the worse you are, the more you will swing, and the better workout you’ll get! Throwing clubs is also a full body workout – just make sure to keep both hands on the golf club during the throw to incorporate both sides of the body.

The act of playing golf will leave you so frustrated and distressed that you won’t even know you are exercising! Next time you are golfing, ditch the cart and enjoy all of the bad shots – that’s just more opportunity to walk (into the woods) and to enjoy a more full body workout.
