Final: Ure vs. Jab Bike
Seeking his second consecutive La Grange Icebreaker title and his second Icebreaker title overall, Ray Ure was efficient in his two-game sweep against first-time Icebreaker finalist Jab Bike, building leads in both games and holding off late Bike charges.
After winning a competitive first game, Ure raced to a 19-11 lead in the second. Supported by a large contingent of Bikes that traveled thousands of miles to watch the fourth-generation star battle for his first Icebreaker title on Ure’s home court, Bike earned a side out and quickly closed the gap to 15-19 against a visibly fatiguing Ure.
Ure dashed the hopes of the Bike dynasty, who had risen to their feet during the comeback, scoring consecutive points to end the match, giving him his second La Grange Icebreaker title and second Icebreaker championship. Ure now holds the WPH Race 4 Eight Player’s Championship (May), USHA Four Wall National pro singles championship (June), and the La Grange Icebreaker title (July).
“I started hitting good deep serves to the left (late in the second game) and that was working,” Bike would later say. “I didn’t really have that deep serve to the left in the final. I did not hit a good serve at 15 (15-19), unfortunately. I felt like I played well and Ray played well too. The first game was close; he pulled away towards the end but I had chances.”
“Definitely some nerves that I had to shut down quickly and forget about (late in the second game),” Ure would later say regarding Jab’s comeback bid. “John pulled comebacks on me last year at Nationals (Toledo) like that, so staying relaxed in those moments was important. Overall, felt smooth and more methodical as the match went on.”
Final: Ure def Bike 21-17, 21-15
Fifth place final: John Chapman def Taylor Schmitt 25-9
John Chapman completed an impressive weekend with a dominating fifth place playoff run, defeating Dane Szatkowski in the fifth place semifinals and Taylor Schmitt in the fifth place final.
