The Cowtown “No Frills” Classic: The Battle of the Mulkerrins

Ft. Worth, TX, WPH Press, 10/24/23

Written by Martin Mulkerrins

Ft. Worth’s L.A. Fitness played host to the October 20-21, 2023 Cowtown Classic, featuring thirty-two players from across the state of Texas. Tournament director Tag Coolidge organized the tournament for handball players from Texas A&M, the University of Texas and Angelo State to play in an additional tournament played before Missouri State’s Bear Bash (October 27-29) and the Texas State Championship Race 4 Eight Pre Qualifier (November 10-12).

A number of student-athlete handball players were playing in their first tournament, while others showed huge improvements since September’s Austin City Championship (HERE) and Jack Gressett Handball Race 4 Eight Pre Qualifier (HERE)tournaments.

The Men’s Open Singles final pitted brothers Martin and Diarmuid Mulkerrins for the first time in competitive play in the United States, with Martin taking both games in an 80-minute match, 21-14, 21-17

The Women’ Open bracket crowned Amesley Davis (TAMU) champion, as Amesley won all three of her matches to take the title.

The most enjoyable aspect for all participants at the tournament was the incredible hospitality provided by Tag Coolidge and his family. The three University teams enjoyed dinner on Saturday night and breakfast Sunday morning at Tag’s home.

Thank you to R48 #2 and six-time Race 4 Eight champion for the recap from the Cowtown No Frills
