GAA Handball held its first ranking event of the 2022/23 season at the 34th St. Paul’s FonaCab Golden Gloves in Belfast, Northern Ireland. More than 200 players entered the various grades, with 21 players entering the Men’s Senior (Open) Singles and 10 ladies entering the Ladies Senior (Open) Singles.

Robbie McCarthy started the season in peak form, dominating his four opponents en route to the title, including a two-game thrashing of current All Ireland 40×20 champion Diarmaid Nash in the final.

Catriona Casey continued to dominate the women’s scene on both sides of the pond, returning from winning her twenty-third WR48 championship at the Tucson Memorial at the beginning of November and capturing the Golden Gloves with a two-game sweep in the finals against Martin McMahon.

Final: Casey def McMahon 15-12, 15-11

“Robbie was very good, very fit,” stated Golden Gloves semifinalist and R48 pro David Walsh. “Catriona was very good too, she had a tough route – she beat Ciana Ni Churraoin in the quarter, Eilise McCrory in the semi and Martina in the final. Nash maybe hadn’t too much done (preparation), he started last season slow too.”
