Tournament preview written by tournament director Martin Mulkerrins

The Texas A&M Handball Club is excited and proud to host yet another WPH R48 Pre-Qualifier, for both Men and Women, as part of our Fall 2024 Aggieland Classic (October 11-13th).

The Fall 2024 Aggieland Classic honors Don Johnson and James (Jim) Mathis, as it is 70 years since they won TAMU’s first National Intercollegiate Handball Title. Don and Jim won all of their doubles matches at the Intercollegiate Handball Championship hosted by the Town Club in Chicago in 1954. According to the Ace magazine report from the event, Don and Jim’s most important win was against Detroit pair Joe DeGroot and John Dunnigan. The Aggies won both games 21-20 in the final.

Sadly, Jim passed away earlier this year and the Texas A&M Handball Club would like to honor Jim and celebrate his life, as well as his contributions to the sport of handball at TAMU and in Texas at this tournament. Don tells us of how extraordinary Jim was as an athlete. In addition to his national title in handball, he won intramural championships in handball, badminton, golf, table tennis and tennis here at TAMU. Among many other achievements, Jim was a pilot in the US Air Force, the mayor of Waco, and for 25 years organized the Mathis Invitational Handball Tournament.  We hope to be joined by friends and family of both the Johnson and Mathis families to mark this occasion and honor two Aggie legends.

Together, Don and Jim have donated $25,000 to TAMU as an endowment to give a yearly scholarship to one of our club members. At 90 years of age, Don is still assisting with both the coaching of the Texas A&M handball team and the teaching of the handball classes every week. He even traveled with the Texas A&M handball team to the Collegiate National Championships in Missouri (2022) and Tucson (2023). We are so thankful for his support of handball here at TAMU.
