Sunday Stats: Meet the Houdini of Handball – From SI, 1990

WPH Press

The WPH has proudly presented the WPH Sunday Stats since the start of 2020, highlighting the Race 4 Eight’s and Icebreaker’s greatest champions, longest winning streaks, greatest accomplishments, tournament directors, nicknames, obscure stats, handball’s origins and history, and so much more. This Sunday we’ll revisit the 1990 Sports Illustrated article focused on El Gato’s quest for #11.

Sports Illustrated’s Hank Hersch chronicled Naty Alvarado’s handball beginnings and hardships, and desire to win his 11th USHA Four Wall National crown, the year after his protégé Poncho Monreal ended Naty’s streak of seven straight titles.
