Sunday Stats: 1-Wall Handball’s Origins

WPH Press

The WPH has proudly presented the Race 4 Eight Sunday Stats since the start of the pandemic, highlighting the Race 4 Eight’s greatest champions, longest winning streaks, greatest accomplishments, tournament directors, nicknames, obscure stats, handball’s origins and history, and so much more. This Sunday we’ll continue to discuss the origins and history of handball.

Earlier this year, WPH Sunday Stats discussed the origins of 1-Wall handball in the United States HERE. Prior to 1-Wall handball’s inception in the United States, accounts of 1-Wall handball were given as early as the year 1700 in Ireland. Irish migrants are credited with introducing 1-Wall handball in England in the 1700’s, with indoor tennis courts becoming popular sites for handball. Because of the side walls in the indoor tennis courts, handball expanded from 1-Wall to multi-wall, and returning Irishmen are credited with bringing the multi-wall game back to Ireland. Courts with side walls became known as “Fives Courts,” and were built in Wexford, Clare and Dublin.
