The San Angel Handball Club played host to the Primer Torneo Annual “Pepe Medina” Memorial Tournament in Juarez, Mexico, featuring 60 players, including a number of the game’s top stars.

In the 4-Wall pro singles upper bracket semifinals, Luis Cordova defeated Leo Canales, Jr. to advance to the final, while Daniel Cordova emerged from the bottom bracket. “Leo and I had a good game,” stated Luis. “He played very well. It felt like it was pretty even the whole match.”

Luis defeated Daniel in two games in the final, 15-9, 15-11. “Daniel was playing with an injured foot in the final, so he wasn’t getting everything back like he usually does. Even though it wasn’t as close as it usually is between us, people were excited to watch.”

Luis Cordova Sr was given a special award for recognition as a contributor and promoter of handball in Juarez

Luis triple-slammed the event, taking down Daniel in the singles final, teaming with Daniel to win the Big Ball doubles against El Paso’s Noe Arenas and Jonathan Chavez, and teaming with Marcos Renteria to win the Small Ball doubles.

“We held a qualifier to play in the pro/am doubles the week before and the top six finishers were paired with the pros,” explained Luis. “I drew Marcos Renteria out of the hat and we beat Daniel and Victor Gonzalez in a tiebreaker in the final.”
