MSHA 2022 Minnesota State Open Singles: Doyle Overcomes Dunne

Fridley, MN, WPH Press, 11/19/ 22

The 2022 MSHA Minnesota State Open Singles featured a number of the game’s future stars, as Minnesota State collegiate stars Mark Doyle and Shane Dunne headlined a field that also included Luis Mendez, Ryan Pesch, and Luke Sandy.

Three weeks after qualifying on the Race 4 Eight tour for the first time at the 2022 Tucson Memorial, Mark Doyle was seeking his first open singles title on U.S. soil at the Life Time Fitness in Fridley. Doyle overcame Minnesota’s Ryan Pesch in the bottom bracket semifinal and would face his compatriot Shane Dunne in the final.

Doyle defeated Dunne in October’s Handballesta in Kansas and would defeat Dunne again at the MS State Singles, winning the first game convincingly and holding off a Dunne charge in game two.

“I played well in parts and then not so good in others, felt I was living on scraps a little bit too”, stated Doyle, who has a 4-Wall handball court in his backyard in Ireland. “I wasn’t confident coming in as I was playing terrible for the last two weeks since Tucson.”

Semifinals

Dunne def Mendez 21-7, 21-6

Doyle def Pesch 21-19, 21-6

Final: Doyle def Dunne 21-5, 21-15
