Both Killian Carroll and Daniel Cordova entered the Icebreaker #11 final undefeated at Clark Park in Icebreaker action, with both Carroll and Cordova narrowly escaping defeat in their Icebreaker 11 semifinal matches, meaning someone’s undefeated record would have to go. Known as “The Bourne Supremacy” (TBS) on the tour because of his uncanny resemblance to Matt Damon and his ability to overcome all odds against any player, Carroll would need his Bourne escape tactics in this first game. Danos went toe to toe with the fittest player in the game, slugging out 17 6+ shot rallies in this first game classic. Let examine all of the stats in this Icebreaker 11 edition of Crunching the Numbers

Stats: Carroll vs. Danos Game 1 Icebreaker 11 Final

Aces

Carroll: 4

Danos: 6

Danos holds the reputation as the best server in the sport and he delivered in this first game, scoring 6 of his 14 points (43%) with ace serves. Carroll is the game’s best clutch server, serving his best when he needs it most. Carroll seemed content to start rallies with his left-handed serve, but when facing a 12-14 deficit, Carroll switched to his right hand serve and notched two consecutive aces

First Strike Kills

Carroll: 4

Danos: 1

Carroll won 25% of his points with his first strike, while Danos was not able to execute many first strike serves, mostly due to Carroll’s speed and well-placed defensive returns

Return of Serve Kills

Carroll: 1

Danos: 1

Right Hand Rally-Enders

Carroll: 11

Danos: 7

Left Hand Rally Enders

Carroll: 1

Danos: 1

Carroll’s only left hand kill came on a diving re kill at 14-14, one of the best shots in the history of the Icebreaker tour

6+ Shot Rallies Won

Carroll: 8

Danos: 9

This game featured 17 6+ shot rallies, many of which exceeded 12 shots. This grueling affair left both players spent, as both superstars covered every corner of Clark Park’s Freddy B show court

Errors

Carroll: 5

Danos: 5

As Carroll has shown in the past, he is prone to early-game errors, but very rarely will make an error in the championship moments. Predictably, Carroll tightened up his game, making zero errors in the final eight rallies of the match

Fly Kills:

Carroll: 1

Danos: 3

Hinders: 1

Time: 20:05

Final: 16-14

Total Points Scored: 30

Game one was close throughout, as Carroll struggled with Danos’s hop serve, but stayed within striking distance with hustle and timely kills. Danos eventually served for the game at 14-12, but as we have seen in so many Icebreaker matches, 14-12 is the Icebreaker curse. Just as so many before him have experienced, Danos failed to score the fifteenth point, opening the door for four straight Carroll points, highlighted by a seemingly impossible Carroll diving re kill to score the fifteenth point and forced an error for the sixteenth point and the first game.

“I still feel like I have a long way to go and a lot to learn in 3-Wall,” stated Carroll. “I am enjoying learning and trying new shots. For me, it’s back to serious training as the 1-Wall, 3-Wall, and 4-Wall Nationals approach.”

On the next Crunching the Numbers, we will examine the stats from one of the Icebreaker Big Ball games to this Icebreaker 11 game one Small Ball final. Stay tuned!
