The 16th USHA Wallball National Championships concluded in Coney Island with more than 100 participants, including many of the game’s best men’s and women’s WallBall stars.
Men’s Pro Singles
Tavo Ruiz entered the 16th USHA Wallball National Championships as the defending champion, having defeated David Velez and Tywan Cook to make last year’s final. Tavo continued to dominate the WallBall Nationals, cruising to the final in the upper bracket for the second consecutive year by outscoring Hector Velez and Carlin Rosa by a combined 50-7 in the quarterfinals and semifinals.
Tywan Cook was equally impressive in his march to the final in the bottom bracket, defeating Dan Pitre in the quarterfinals and former King of the Courts David Velez in the semifinals in his quest to regain the WallBall national title he lost to Tavo last June.
“Tavo’s punch serve from low to high kept Tywan back and forced weak returns and allowed him to finish many rallies quickly,” stated Isaias Rivera. “There were several long rallies but Tavo maintained court control.”
Semifinals
Tavo def Rosa 25-7
Tywan def Velez 25-25
Final: Tavo def Tywan 25-13
Women’s Pro Singles
The Women’s Pro Singles played out nearly identically to last year’s WallBall Nationals, as defending champion Jenny Qu faced Melanie Garate in the final. In a repeat of last year’s final, Qu’s precision and accuracy were too much for Garate to overcome, as Qu retained her title.
Semifinals
Qu def Mena 25-0
Garate def Colon 25-14
Final: Qu def M. Garate 25-12
Men’s Pro Doubles Final: Garcia/Rosa def Mendez/Yagual 25-12
Women’s Pro Doubles Final: Team Garate def Qu/Lloyd 25-16
