The Alberta Handball Association and tournament director Guy Martin were proud to present the 2025 Calgary Open 4-Wall Championships at the University of Calgary Recreation Center.
The 2025 Calgary Open 4-Wall Championships featured men’s and women’s open and skill level singles and doubles, in addition to junior singles and doubles brackets.
Men’s Open Singles
In a rematch of the 2024 Calgary Open Men’s Open Singles final won by Patrick Shearer, the 2025 edition also featured Shearer and Shane Vigen in the final.
Shearer advanced to the final in the upper bracket with two-game wins against Leo Day and Shawn Kupchenko, while Vigen also advanced to the final without dropping a game with wins against Mason Teierle and Alex Macdonald in the bottom bracket.
Seeking revenge against Shearer from the 2024 Calgary Open final, Vigen dominated game one and stood within three points of the title in game two. Shearer rallied, forcing a tiebreaker.
After trading points throughout the tiebreaker, Shearer fought off match point at 10-10 in the tiebreaker to repeat in Calgary.
“Not the best performance by either of us, but I’ve struggled against Pat the last few tourneys and to almost beat him was a good thing for me,” stated Vigen. “I was down 10-7 (in the tiebreaker), clawed my way back and went for the ace serve at 10-10 and it just didn’t work.”
“The final was a thriller,” exclaimed tournament director and 2025 Calgary Open 60+ singles champion Guy Martin. “The tiebreaker was back and forth.”
Final: Shearer def Vigen 2-15, 15-12, 11-10
Men’s Open Doubles Final: Vigen/Huber def Shearer/Kupchenko 15-13, 6-15, 11-7
Thank you to tournament director Guy Martin and the Alberta Handball Association for an outstanding tournament.
