2024 Milwaukee Classic Wraps: Ure and Munroe Take Brew City

West Allis, WI, WPH Press, 12/8,24

The Wisconsin Athletic Club and tournament director Jeffrey Werstein were thrilled to present the 2024 Milwaukee Handball Classic on the first weekend in December in West Allis, WI.

“The Milwaukee Handball Classic, the region’s premier event, hosted some of the country’s best handball talent and some of handball’s best hospitality,” stated the 2024 Milwaukee Classic’s R2 page.

Men’s Open Singles

The 2024 Milwaukee Classic Men’s Open Singles field featured a mixture of young pros and veterans, as young stars Ray Ure, Bryan Trejo, the Schmitt Brothers, and Luis Mendez were joined by older pros Dave Munson and Bill Mehilos in the twelve-player field.

Ray Ure dominated the upper bracket in Brew City, dispatching Mankato teammate Bryan Trejo in two games in the semifinals, while Dave Munson defeated Bill Mehilos in the bottom bracket semifinal to meet Ure in the final.

Ure was too strong for the 2025 LaGrange WPH Icebreaker tournament director and SR48 #2 in the final, overpowering Munson to take the Milwaukee title in two games.

“The final went well,” Ure would later say from West Allis. “I took a step back up since Worlds on being comfortable on the court and was able to use the back wall to my advantage. My serves also helped a lot with getting setups and points.”

Semifinals

Ure def Trejo 21-8, 21-9

Munson def Mehilos 21-11, 21-13

Final: Ure def D. Munson 21-5, 21-10

Women’s Open Singles

Much like the Men’s Open Singles field, the women’s field featured a mixture of collegiate players and older players, as collegiate star Clodagh Munroe, Izzy Klicker, Emma Kinane, and Audrey Peters were joined by Megan Dorneker and Carly Munson in the eight-player field.

Munroe kept her Midwest winning streak intact in Milwaukee, winning the 2024 Classic without dropping a game, including a two-game sweep in the finals against Ireland’s Jodie Keeling.

Semifinals

Munroe def Kinane 21-7, 21-12

Keeling def Dorneker 21-11, 21-13

Final: Munroe def Keeling 21-10, 21-13

Thank you to tournament director Jeffrey Werstein for a great event in West Allis.
