The University of Calgary Recreation Center played host to the 2024 Calgary Open 4-Wall Tournament on the last weekend in January, featuring players from across Alberta.
Men’s Open Singles
Former Canadian Nationals open singles finalist and Alberta handball legend Shane Vigen entered the 2024 Calgary Open Men’s Singles as the top seed and advanced to the final with little difficulty, defeating Jeremy Tripp and Alex Macdonald, while second-seeded Patrick Shearer played close matches with Leo Day and Shawn Kupchenko to meet Vigen in the final.
Shearer upset the Pride of Alberta in two games to take the title, wrestling Alberta’s top spot from Vigen. “Pat and I always have good battles,” stated Vigen. “He’s upped his game these last couple of years. I got him back in doubles though!”
Men’s Open Singles Final: Shearer def Vigen 21-17, 21-12
Women’s Open Singles
Michelle Udo dominated the Women’s Open singles round robin, winning all four of her matches without dropping a game and outscoring her four opponents by s combined score of 120-69.
Women’s Open Singles Final: Udo def Briand 15-8, 15-10
“It was a great little tournament,” stated Vigen. “Calgary is doing an amazing job getting juniors and even their parents out playing.”
