12059837_10153551530680519_363459458_oPlay kicked off at the 6th annual WPH/WOR 3WallBall Outdoor World Championships at the Stratosphere Hotel and Casino, with the game’s small ball stars taking center stage on the Stratosphere’s outdoor handball amphitheater.

Men’s Small Ball 3-Wall Quarterfinals

Top seeded and 2014 Small Ball 3-Wall King Nik Nahorniak’s title defense came to an abrupt end at the hands of first-time 3WallBall participant Mando Ortiz. Ortiz served 20 aces in two games and completely dominated the Midwest powerhouse, 15-4, 15-2.

Luis Moreno appeared to be in control of his quarterfinal clash with R48 #12 Vic Perez, leading 12-2, 11-8. A Moreno error opened the door for the sneaky good Southern Californian, as Perez forced a tiebreaker, 12-11. Moreno led 6-0 in the tiebreaker before seeing his lead shrink to 6-4. Moreno appeared to be in control at 11-6, as he served for the match for the second time. Three consecutive Moreno errors and two Perez kills cut the deficit to 10-11, and with Perez earning a huge setup with his right hand from the foot fault line on the 19th shot of the 10-11 rally, it appeared the score would be tied at 11. Perez inexplicably skipped the setup, handing Moreno the serve. A Perez return of serve error sealed the match for “The Natural,” 12-2, 11-12, 12-10.

David Fink defeated third seeded Shorty Ruiz in the quarterfinals for the second time in three years, utilizing a two-way hope serve and overhand drives to overcome the cross over star. Sean Lenning easily advanced to the semifinals with a clinical two-game sweep against Luis Jimenez.
